The release of next season’s fixtures has been a fragmented affair this year.
Normally, Premier League and Football League – now rebranded as the English Football League – are synchronised, and released on the same day.
This year, the fixtures were scheduled for release at 9.00am on Wednesday 15 June, but the EPL delayed release of their fixtures by a week.
For several years, the draw for the First Round of the League Cup has been the curtain raiser for the main event.
The matches have been announced at 10.00am the day before the League fixtures are revealed.
Thus far, the EPL have not said when the draw will be made. Capital One’s sponsorship of the event has ended, and it may be that the EPL would like to have a new sponsor in place before making the draw.
Similarly, Johnstone’s Paint’s sponsorship of the League Trophy has ended, so the EPL will be on the hunt for another new sponsor.
All fans will have their eyes on media outlets on Wednesday to see how their season is mapped out.
The new season starts on the weekend of 6 August, with the opening round of the League Cup taking place immediately after, during week commencing 8 August.
The EPL will have to make the draw soon.
