Clemence wants more Gills luck

Stephen Clemence is hoping his side earn some more luck following the 2-0 loss to Wrexham at the weekend.

It took less than a minute for Ollie Palmer to open the scoring for the home side in Wales on Saturday, Clemence’s first league game in charge of The Gills as Head Coach.

A lacklustre display then followed leaving the thousand plus travelling fans wondering what’s changed since Neil Harris was sacked a month ago.

Clemence has clearly got a big job on his hands as The Gills have dropped to 10th place in League Two, but he’s hoping Saturday was just a blip and spending more time with his players will yield better results:

“They’re 11 unbeaten now so they’re obviously a very good team. Phil’s (Parkinson) put a very good team together, they’re very physical and difficult to play against.”

“They put the ball into the box and there’s where we were undone. It was two crosses into our box and we’ve not dealt with them.”

“There were encouraging signs for me in the first half. I know our end product has to improve, but we had a couple of good chances.”

“When you come to somewhere like Wrexham, who are near the top, you need a bit of luck to go your way.”

“We didn’t defend the crosses well enough. It’s something we spoke about trying to stop.”

“But it happens. Sometimes you start games well and sometimes you don’t.”

“They showed great strength of character because they could have gone under there. The crowd was obviously up and it could’ve been a difficult afternoon and they’ve stuck in there.”

Stuck in there is one way of looking at it as The Gills didn’t get thrashed, but many fans have questioned how much threat there is going forward and some players appear to be either unfit or unwilling to put much effort in.

Clemence has a full week to prepare for Saturday’s visit of Salford City to Priestfield on Saturday.

His first league game at home in charge offers a massive chance to change the narrative and get fans believing the play-offs or even promotion could be a possibility come the end of the campaign.

Lose again and some will be wondering whether the bubble under the Galinson family is already started to deflate.
