Stephen Clemence has spoken of his pride at the performance from his side that saw Gillingham draw 0-0 with league leaders Stockport County.
In a game of few real chances at Priestfield on Tuesday night, Gillingham once again lacked that cutting edge meaning they’ve now failed to score in their past two games.
A backs to the wall formation and performance saw The Gills cling on for a point in a display that won’t live long in the memory, but for Clemence, it was a point gained rather than two missed out on.
He said: “It’s a very difficult game, they’re the top scorers in the division so we knew we had to be spot on defensively.”
“They tested us at times but I don’t think they threatened us too much – one or two shots, and they hit the post with a wide free-kick that was probably a cross.”
“Defensively we were very, very sound and we had to work hard for the clean sheet so I’m really proud of the boys’ efforts tonight.”
“Yeah, we didn’t create enough ourselves, but we were better in the second half than the first and that’s a good point there today.”
Meanwhile, Stockport manager Dave Challinor felt his side had done enough to win the game, but was happy to have come away with a point.
He said: “After the last two games, we got back to where we were defensively and I thought we were really good there today.”
“I’ve been critical of the team and they’ve been critical of themselves at times; we’ve got to be better and we were tonight and that gives us a platform to go on and get a result. If you’re not going to defend properly and to the level consistently then you’re going to struggle to win games.”
“Before the game, would I have taken the point? No because I want to win, but will I have taken a clean sheet as a minimum? Absolutely.”
“We needed to find that moment of quality. In fact, we found moments of quality but not moments of quality that gets us the goal, if that would have been the case it would have been the perfect away performance, but we’ll take that point.”
Meanwhile, Clemence confirmed that despite starting in the B team game against Brentford on Tuesdat afternoon and having scored, striker Josh Andrews picked up an injury.
The former Birmingham City man is yet to make his Gillingham debut since signing in the January transfer window and depending upon the results of a scan today, that wait might go on a little longer for fans who were desperate to see what he could add to the side.
With Jorge Hurtado back at Watford following his injury was sustained against Swindon Town last week, Gillingham are very light now on attacking options and that showed against Stockport.
Josh Walker looks short of form with Jayden Clarke given the nod to play alongside him on Tuesday night.
Striker Joe Gbode has been recalled from his loan spell at Aveley and could now come into contention for a place in the Gillingham squad for Saturday’s clash with Wrexham at Priestfield.
