Stephen Clemence has issued a rallying cry to the Gillingham fans to get behind his team ahead of Saturday’s trip to Morecambe.
Gillingham head north this weekend still only a single point outside the League Two Play Off places despite a run that has yielded just two points out of a possible twelve.
Speaking to KSN ahead of the weekend’s trip, Clemence issued a rallying cry to the club’s supporters, saying: “There is no reason with seven games to go we cannot turn it around and make the Play Offs.”
“We are one point short – let’s keep going, let us all keep believing as a Football Club and look forward to the game on Saturday!”
“It is all about us this weekend to show intent on the road to go and get the victory. If we play to our levels and we are consistent and play in both halves of football – a challenge that I have laid down to the boys – seven games to go, fourteen halves of football and we have got to attack every half of football.”
“We cannot waste halves of football at this stage of the season – we have probably wasted too many already. We have go to Morecambe from the start and try to get after them and try and get the victory which will be the aim!”
“They have had a good season – they’ve done well, even if the results have not been quite so good lately, but they had a great run just after Christmas and have some good players,” Clemence said.
“But so have we and our boys will really be looking forward to it. One point off the Play Offs – if you cannot be looking forward to a game like this, there really is something wrong with you!”
“Twenty-one points to play for – we’ll be right up for it, and we will be looking to take our game to them.”
“But we do have to concentrate on one game at a time. People keep saying games are “must-win” – we have not taken enough points recently; we know that we have got to win games between now and the end of the season.”
“This team is well capable of going on a run – we have just got to take care of the next game first, and I believe that the boys are fully focused and right up for it and really looking forward to the game this weekend!”
“What it would mean for me to get to the Play Offs, it would mean everything and probably be the biggest achievement of my career.”
“That’s how much I want to do it – I would love to lead a team out at Wembley – it would be fantastic. The boys in the dressing room want the same thing as well, so we will be giving it our utmost to get there!”
“I think my experience of being in and around the Play Offs and being involved in these situations before is you have to be in it on Easter weekend and Easter weekend always sorts out the runners and riders – those two games over Easter – so we have to make sure that we’re in it over the Easter weekend (Gills host Crewe on Good Friday before travelling to Harrogate on Easter Monday) and then we have to make sure that we stay in it and make sure that we take it right to the last game!”
“But we have to win some football matches…”
Clemence then confirmed his squad news and the bug that affected the Club before the Tranmere game last weekend has mostly cleared up, although an unnamed member of the squad is still suffering and has missed training.
On the plus side, Conor Masterson returns from suspension and January signing Josh Andrews is in contention for possibly a place on the bench.
Ethan Coleman also returns to the squad after missing last weekend, whilst Dom Jefferies’ recovery continues with hopefully a return early next month.
