Struggling for goals, Welling United visit Chippenham Town on Saturday looking to end their barren run in the Vanarama National League South.
Fourteen goals in fifteen league games means that they are the joint lowest scorers in the league and failing to score in seven games, including the last three, has dragged then into the dogfight at the wrong end of the table.
Mark Goldberg, Welling’s manager, is under no illusions. He signed Nnambi Nwachuku on Tuesday night, a striker who has scored 101 goals in 100 games for Coggleshall Town over the last four years, and threw straight into the starting line-up at Slough Town on Tuesday evening.
It was tough for him to meet his team-mates for the first time upon arriving at the ground but once he has worked with the squad in training and played a couple of games, Goldberg will be hoping that he starts to replicate his form.
Had Bradley Goldberg not been injured, Nwachuku might have been eased in more gently but even though he was unsure of how Welling play, he still showed glimpses of what he has to offer and had Welling’s only shot in the first half.
Chippenham are in mid-table but are only three points ahead of the Wings. Their home form is good having won three, drawn two and lost one and they are unbeaten in their last six league games but, as has been shown many times this season, this league is very unpredictable so if Welling get their tactics right, there’s no reason why they can’t turn things around, starting on Saturday.
In the corresponding fixture last season, Welling won emphatically. Brendan Kiernan put them ahead but Karnell Chambers levelled. Brad Goldberg restored Welling’s lead from the spot before Thierry Audel added a third still before half time. Kiernan added a fourth in the second half and Welling cruised to a comfortable victory.
