Chippenham Town 4-1 Welling United

There was disappointment for Welling United as they crashed to defeat at Chippenham Town.

Looking at the score-line alone, it would appear that Welling were on the end of a thumping but it didn’t really tell the true story.

They started quickly and David Amoo, on his full Welling debut, combined well with Jason Adigun and fired towards the bottom corner where Will Henry got across well to save.

In the ninth minute, Welling went ahead. Cameron Green sent over a deep corner that Riccardo Di Trolio headed back across goal and Jack Burchell fired home from close range.

Adigun had a low shot saved by Henry then Burchell dispossessed Will King and created a chance for Sonny Fish who unleashed a powerful drive that flew just over.

At the other end, a rare Chippenham foray ended when Tyreke Johnson sent in a low cross that eluded Matt McClure at the far post before Welling had one last first half chance when Adigun gave Fish another opportunity to shoot but his effort was blocked away for a corner.

After the break, the hosts tried to impose themselves and McClure’s header forward sent Tom Owen-Evans through but the angle was too tight for him and he could only clip it into the side netting. McClure then had a low shot of his own that Reice Charles-Cook saved without too much worry.

Once those chances had passed, the Wings again looked to be in control. Antony Papadopoulos strode forward and hit a powerful shot towards the top corner but Henry saved superbly at full length. Fish then shot on the spin and drew another good save out of the Chippenham goalkeeper.

Against the run of play, the Bluebirds levelled midway through the second period. Luke Haines was allowed space and time to line up a shot and he arrowed it into the bottom corner from over thirty yards.

Luke Spokes then came close with an effort that was cleared off the line by Burchell before Chippenham went ahead in a bizarre manner. Johnson’s cross from the right wing caught in the wind and sailed over Charles-Cook and into the net.

Papadopoulos tried to get Welling back on level terms with another good effort but Henry was equal to the task and made the save.

Nine minutes remained when the Bluebirds sealed the win. Ed Williams found Owen-Evans and he finished clinically.

Johnson had a shot saved comfortably by Charles-Cook before the Welling goalkeeper had to work a little harder to keep out Craig Fasanmade’s effort. However, he was powerless to stop Chippenham from adding a fourth. Tom Mehew’s diagonal cross to the far post was tucked away by Johnson.

Gene Kennedy had one last effort for Welling but he was well off target and the final whistle blew before play restarted.
