March ended for Welling United with defeat as they were beaten in a midweek match at Chippenham Town.
Warren Feeney’s Welling team came out the faster and Dylan Gavin did well early on when turning Ollie Tomlinson and bursting away but his cross shot went wide of the far post.
However, in their next attack the Wings went ahead. Christie Pattisson’s perseverance enabled him to make the space to cross deep to Taylor Maloney and he exhibited tremendous technique when volleying home.
Their lead only lasted for five minutes, though. Owen Windsor picked out Joe Parker in space down the left-hand side, but Yusuf Mersin might have felt that he could have done better with Parker’s shot that went in at the near post.
Pattisson thought that he had won Welling a penalty when his cross struck an arm in the eighteen-yard box that nothing was awarded before Windsor broke through but fired over.
More disappointing Welling defending brought about them falling behind. Tom Mehew sent Matt McClure in behind and he made no mistake with a clever finish. He might have scored again with half time approaching but his first-time clip volley went just wide.
After the break, Welling again came out strongly and Chi Ezennolim worked his way to the bye-line. He then crossed low, and Spencer Hamilton went to ground in an attempt to block it and could only stop it with his arm.
Although goalkeeper Will Henry went the right way, Maloney’s shot had the accuracy and power to find the bottom corner.
Substitute Ed Williams hit a long-range effort wide before Welling came close to going ahead. Cameron Andrews found Dylan Gavin, but his powerful drive flew just the wrong side of the post.
Eighteen minutes remained when the Bluebirds went ahead. Williams was given far too much room in the Welling penalty area, and he gave Mersin no chance with his powerful finish.
As Welling tried to find an equaliser, they left himself prone to the break and Parker cut in from the left but scuffed his shot and Mersin saved easily.
Kyrell Lisbie forced his way through for Welling but his low shot was claimed comfortably by Harris then Luke Russe fired over from the edge of the penalty area at the other end. Five additional minutes were played but the nearest that Welling came to equalising was when Kodi Lyons-Foster headed wide.
On Saturday, Welling are back at Park View Road when they entertain Hampton and Richmond Borough knowing that they will need at least one more win to secure safety from relegation.
