Welling United finished their season in disappointing style with defeat at Chippenham Town.
As has been the case in recent weeks, Welling struggled to create clear cut chances despite playing quarter of the match against ten men. Although they haven’t conceded many, they again conceded just once and that was enough.
Matt Smith had the first chance for Chippenham but his effort skimmed the roof of the net then Jack Parkinson found Bradley Goldberg for Welling but his shot on the turn went the wrong side of the post.
Jake Jackson dragged a shot wide for the Bluebirds before Goldberg again failed to hit the target with a flick header from Jack Jebb’s cross.
Greg Tindle and Jon Beeden both failed to hit the target for the hosts before Jebb shot over for the Wings.
After eighteen minutes, Chippenham broke the deadlock. Smith led the break and found Jackson. He, in turn, picked out Andy Sandell who fired beyond Welling goalkeeper Bailey Vose.
Sandell missed a chance to add a second when Vose blocked Michael Jones’ shot out to him before Welling’s Jamie Philpot had a diving header saved.
Injury to Sandell caused a premature end to his season and he was replaced by Kaid Mohamed.
Jebb fired wide then Joe Healy curled over as Welling failed to test Jared Thompson before the break.
He was called upon to make a save immediately after the interval, though. Philpot held the ball up well before finding Healy. He then found Goldberg whose shot was turned around the post brilliantly by Thompson.
Philpot headed over in his final game for Welling before he and Goldberg were replaced by Adam Coombes and Ollie Milton.
Mohamed shot over from Smith’s pull-back before Chippenham were reduced to ten men with thirteen minutes remaining. Beeden kicked out at Driver right in front of referee Robert Massey-Ellis and the official had no option but to dismiss him.
Despite being short-handed, the hosts weren’t bothered unduly and might have gone further ahead in the closing minutes. Robbie Patten’s blocked shot fell into the path of Smith and Vose spread himself well to save with his legs.
That was the last chance of the match and both teams went to their supporters to thank them for their backing over the nine months of the season.
