Chesterfield v Gillingham preview

Gillingham will go in search of their first win under new boss Gareth Ainsworth when they travel to Chesterfield this evening.

In what now is a dead rubber end of the campaign, The Gills will play out the final month of the season playing for pride and for the players, their place in the squad for the next campaign.

Both promotion and relegation are now essentially out of the window for The Gills, so these final few games will be all about laying a platform for next season under Ainsworth as he looks to see which players he wants to keep in the summer.

The 2-2 draw at Salford City on Saturday saw both Elliott Nevitt and Remeao Hutton get on the scoresheet for a Gillingham side that has struggled for goals in recent months.

However, yet another draw sees The Gills near the bottom of League Two and they will be desperate for three points this evening.

Ainsworth is expected to keep faith with the side that started on Saturday as defender Andy Smith could once again be missing through injury. The on loan Hull City centre back has been in good form of late and his place went to Shad Ogie at the weekend.

With Nevitt having scored, he seems set to keep his place up front as Ainsworth will look to get more from his strikers in these next few weeks.

Gillingham go into the game sitting 18th in the league whilst the home side still have play-off ambitions, starting 10th, seven points outside the top seven.

If The Gills are to be a force next season, these are the kinds of games they will need to win, so tonight will hopefully be a turning point in the fortunes under Ainsworth.
