Welling United made their first ever visit to The Swansway Chester Stadium a memorable one in a battle of two promoted teams.
Jamie Day gave Welling first team debuts to Harry Cornick and Oluwatobi Sho-Silva and both were instrumental in the Wings victory.
Harry Beautyman came close before his long ball sent Cornick away and the young AFC Bournemouth loanee finished with aplomb.
John Rooney gave Welling defenders work with his corners and free kicks but the hosts failed to bother Lee Butcher with a shot on target, the closest coming when Ross Killock looped a header onto the roof of the net.
Poor defending allowed Joe Healy to get a shot in that John Danby saved.
That was nowhere near as bad as the defending that resulted in Welling’s second goal although much credit should go to Sho-Silva. A back-pass put Danby under pressure and Sho-Silva was on him quickly to tackle the goalkeeper before laying the ball back for Ross Lafayette to finish.
Nine minutes into the second half, Welling went further ahead. Healy collected a loose ball 25 yards out and picked his spot with a well struck shot.
Chester registered their only shot on target two minutes later when Matty Taylor slipped the offside trap to finish cleanly.
Beautyman came close again before Chester missed a great chance to reduce the arrears but Jason Jarrett prodded wide from close range.
Killock’s game came to an abrupt end when he was shown a second yellow card for bringing down Kurtis Guthrie as he broke in from the wing and Welling saw out the remaining minutes without further discomfort.
