Tyrone Marsh’s injury time goal at Chester City extended Welling United’s unbeaten run to five games.
Had the Wings returned home empty handed, it would have been a travesty as Chester camped in their own half, especially in the second half when they, at times, played six at the back.
On occasions, Welling didn’t help themselves by playing long balls forward when a little more patience might have brought a better outcome.
They had it all to do from the ninth minute when Jonathan Henly failed to deal with a speculative Craig Mahon shot that found its way into the over the line.
Chris Bush was unable to get a clean shot on a half cleared corner before Marsh headed a Ben Jefford cross into the side netting with Joe Worsnip floundering in the Chester goal.
Jon Nouble and Jake Gallagher both had chances but were unable to finish then Gallagher came close again before a caution, just before the break, meant he would be ruled out of his team’s next game at Kidderminster.
Loui Fazakerley shot wide early in the second period before Chester missed two great chances on the break. First Sean McConville fired wide when well placed, then Chris Iwelumo headed wide from Gareth Roberts’ cross.
After that they did not threaten again but as hard as they tried, Welling struggled to create clear cut openings.
Long balls found Marsh crying out for some support as he collected but had nobody in support, crosses evaded everyone, and long shots from Fazakerley and Joe Healy failed to trouble Worsnop.
All appeared lost for Welling until, deep into injury time, substitute Malachi Hudson headed Harry Beautyman’s corner back across the face of goal for Marsh to finish at close range with a clever flick.
Welling will now head to Kidderminster on Wednesday, keen to extend their unbeaten run in front of a ‘live’ TV audience.
