Chatham Town Women eased into the second round of the Women’s Adobe FA Cup with what was in the end a comfortable 5-2 win over Dorking Wanderers Women on Sunday afternoon.
And again it was young striker Amelia Woodgate who took the plaudits with her third hat-trick of the season and along with goals from Ellie Perkins and a fifth which could either go down to Jess King, Lucy Jones or an own goal. The Chats finally eased into the next round after overcoming very dogged opponents from a League lower who had beaten Ashford Town in the previous round, the same side that the Chats had labored to beat in a league game seven days earlier.
The Chats had the better of the opening with both Woodgate and Lottie Sharps sending teasing crosses toward the Dorking goal that didn’t miss by much. The home side eventually got the goal they deserved and it was down to some great play from King, who collected the ball just outside the Dorking box and threaded the most delightful ball through for her young strike partner to run onto and bury past the advancing Tea Oldroyd in the goal.
The home side continued to enjoy the bulk of the opening half’s and only a really fine Oldroyd save denied Darcy Wells from doubling the lead with a fine low drive. Wells though was not to be denied and on the stroke of half time turned provider with another super ball for Woodgate to run through onto and coolly hammering the ball low into the net.
Woodgate was denied her hat-trick early in the second half as Oldroyd made a terrifically strong standing big save, and it was almost as if it revitalised her entire team as the visitors pulled one back shortly after – Sandi Martins did well down the right and her pinpoint cross to the back post was powered home by Molly Childerhouse.
The Chats were not pegged back for long as from their next corner, King caused chaos in the box as Jones’ delivery arrived and the ball went in the net – off who it wasn’t clear – but the important stat was that the home side had their two-goal lead back.
The game opened up with chances at both ends – Jones did well to clear a deep ball into the Chats box whilst Oldroyd pulled off the save of the game to deny Wells following the move of the game – before the home side seemed to have sealed progress when another Jones corner was powerfully headed home by Perkins to make it 4-1. It was nearly five from the next corner as Jones’ flag kick seemed to have deceived Oldroyd only for the keeper to make a really smart save.
The visitors did reduce the arrears with a low drive from the edge of the box but there was still time for the cherry on this particular cake as Woodgate was crudely pulled down, and after consultations between more senior players, the youngster dusted herself down and drove the ball into the net and seal the Chats progress into Round Two where on Monday afternoon they were drawn away to face old foes London Bees.
