Chatham Town 1-4 Welling United
Chatham Town 1-4 Welling United

Finishing proved to be the difference as a Welling United XI defeated a Chatham Town XI in a pre-season friendly.

Clear cut chances were few and far between in the first half, with the visitors having the better of them.

Their first opportunity came when a trialist worked his way through only to see his shot come back out off the inside of the post. He had another opportunity soon after, but his shot was parried out by goalkeeper Dan Ellis.

Ellis was called into action once more before the break when making a good save from another Welling trialist.

After the interval, the hosts had their first clear cut chance when Prince Domafriyie burst through, but Sam Jackson was out quickly to smother. Jackson was called into action again when getting down well before Welling went ahead.

The trialist who twice came close in the first half again showed his sharpness with a clinical finish, Jackson was out quickly to make another good stop before the lively Welling trialist drew another good save out of Ellis.

Matt Bodkin fired high and wide for the Chats before the impressive Welling trialist scored his second when he kept himself onside cleverly before being sent clear and he gave Ellis no chance.

Josh Ogunseye reduced the arrears with a crisp shot from the edge of the area that gave Jackson no chance but Welling regained their two goal lead when Chi Ezennolim was sent clear down the left hand channel and he clipped his shot beyond Ellis and inside the far post.

The fourth and final Welling goal came when another impressive trialist, who already had two assists to his name, found space to pick his spot and fire beyond a helpless Ellis.

Although both teams were short of players who are likely to be in the starting line-ups for the start of their respective league seasons, the two managers will have enjoyed seeing their fringe players and potential new signings.
