Chatham Town 1-1 Bognor Regis Town

Chatham’s faint chance of reaching the play-offs suffered a further set back when they were held by relegation threatened Bognor Regis Town in what can be described as a drab draw on Saturday afternoon.

The game took a long time to get going as Chatham buoyed by their four wins on the spin were a shadow of those wins and Bognor Regis were a different side to the previous encounter (7-1 defeat).

Bognor were the better of the two sides as they bullied Chatham ensuring they had to rush things then in the 41st minute against the run of play Chatham took the lead when Reece Butler on halfway threaded the ball through for Freddie Sears who 15 yards out stabbed the ball past the onrushing Ryan Hall for his 18th goal of the season.

Goals do change games as in the first minute of added on time Kian Garlinge got to the by-line and passed into the path of Simon Cooper who from ten yards saw his shot superbly saved by Hall.

Chats did not want the half time whistle to blow as they had got on top and were looking the more likely to score but the whistle went and Bognor Regis went in probably believing they could get back into it, while Chatham would hope they continued in the same pattern as the last minutes of the half.

The second half started near enough the same as the first but a goal came earlier than the first when in the 53rd minute Bognor deservedly equalised when Bailey Smith on the right beat Kasim Aidoo went to the by-line and his low cross found Tommy-Lee Higgs who shot in from ten yards.

This got Bognor going and in the 65th and 66th minute Matt Burgess saw his shots from 20 yards go just past the post. Chatham had two half chances which came in the 74th minute when Jamie Yila on the left wriggled his way to the by-line and his low cross was waiting for a forward to knock in but it evaded everyone including defenders.

Then in the 90th minute when Sears saw his volleyed shot from 18 yards go just past the post. The final whistle went and Bognor Regis deserved a point which might help in their relegation fight while Chatham will be disappointed in the result but get back on the horse on Tuesday night when they play Dover. The only downside was Sam Sene-Richardson going off with a bad injury which looks likely his season over.
