It’s hard to imagine that in a few short hours, Kent football could once again see history made as for the first time since 1931, Chatham Town bid for a place in the First Round of the FA Cup.
Let’s put it into perspective – 1931 was the year that the Empire State building in New York City was finished and work began on the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco… It was the same year that Mikhail Gorbachev and Rupert Murdoch were born as well as both Captain Kirk and Mr Spock.
That along with the Greatest Cup Competition in the World are the two ideal and wonderful ingredients that makes this afternoon at the Maidstone Road Sports Ground in Chatham such a wonderful afternoon for Non League football – it is pure theatre and the script could not have been written any better… and is a must for all football fans in the Medway Towns who are left clicking their heels at home with both the Gills and Lordswood away from home!
And that is why Kent Sports News are delighted to be involved in the Chats big day as joint match ball sponsors along with the Medway Labour Group.
Group leader Cllr Vince Maple who is regularly seen on the Maidstone Road terraces, said,
“As leader Medway Labour Group and one of the three Chatham Central ward (which is home to the Maidstone Road Sports Ground) councillors, we are pleased to be co-sponsoring the Matchball with KSN.”
“During the Chats 130th Anniversary season they took time to help a local charity to support a child with a rare medical condition – again the link between the sport of football and community in a real tangible way.”
“Make no mistake, today is the Chats FA Cup final…. its the last Qualifying round which means “little” Chatham Town are just 90 minutes away from potentially playing clubs like Portsmouth, Wolves or even the blue side of Medway aka The Gills, and even of course a place on nations TV screens.”
“I just hope that this really is a afternoon that we’ll never forget and that the club get their full rewards to a packed out crowd all of who will be ready for a historic 90 mins of football – we hope!”
