Charlton’s winless streak continues

Two sides that Charlton are desperate to keep at arm’s length are Millwall and Wigan.

Ian Holloway would have fancied his chances of taking three points from Huddersfield at the Den. The Lions cancelled out Sean Scannell’s early strike but the Terriers won thanks to two late strikes.

A glass would have been raised to Addicks legend and former manager, Chris Powell, by the Valley faithful on Saturday evening.

Less of a surprise was Bournemouth’s win at Wigan. The Latics have not won at the DW Stadium since the end of August, a run of twelve games.

With table topping Bournemouth providing the opposition on Saturday, it would have been a surprise if Wigan had arrested their winless streak.

The Cherries opened up a three goal lead before the hour mark, before the Latics notched a consolation.

The second of Bournemouth’s goals was scored by Valley cult hero, Yann Kermorgant.

Back in the Championship relegation season of 2008/09, Charlton went on a run of eighteen games without recording a win, under the stewardship of Alan Pardew and then Phil Parkinson.

Following a 2-1 home win over Ipswich on 4 October, the Addicks had to wait until 13 January, when an early Darren Ambrose goal was enough to beat Norwich.

The match was a replayed Third Round FA Cup tie, played at Carrow Road. The win did not change Charlton’s fortunes, they finished bottom of the table and were relegated to League One at the end of the season.

The Addicks last won on 8 November, when they beat Reading 1-0 at the Madejski Stadium. They have since played thirteen games.

To avoid equalling the unwanted feat of Parkinson’s side, Guy Luzon’s team need to win one of their next five matches.

These fixtures will be against Norwich, Brentford, Wigan, Derby and, ironically, Chris Powell’s Huddersfield.

The emergency loan window opens on Monday, and Luzon will be hoping to make a quick addition or two to his squad.

A target man will be the main priority, though a replacement for Spurs loanee, Milos Veljkovic, may also be sought.

The young midfielder appeared to dislocate his shoulder at the Riverside and could be sidelined for around two months.
