Charlton set pre-season plans
Charlton set pre-season plans

Charlton will report back to Sparrows Lane on Wednesday 25 June to prepare for the 2014/15 season.

The season will kick-off on Saturday 9 August, with the first round of the Capital One Cup being played the following midweek.

The Addicks have requested an away game for the opening weekend of the season, to allow the new pitch longer to bed in. The club would not be disappointed if they were got an away tie when the Capital One Cup draw is made on Tuesday.

The league fixtures for the new campaign will be released a day later, so things are beginning to come together for next season.

The Addicks have still to make a signing of note as yet, but Bob Peeters hinted in his video interview for the club that arrivals may not be far away. Talks are also on-going with the out-of-contract players, notably Michael Morrison and Diego Poyet.

The first couple of days of pre-season will mainly involve medical checks for the players, with the real work beginning onMonday 30 June.

At the end of that week, Peeters’ will take his team to St Truiden for two games, one will be a 45 minute match, the other a full 90 minute game. Neither Chris Solly nor Rhoys Wiggins will be considered for these games as the St Truiden pitch has a 3G playing surface.

The first warm-up match on English soil will be the traditional game at Welling’s Park View Road ground on Saturday 12 July.

Dulwich Hamlet’s site gave details of a match against a Charlton XI on the same day. Hamlet were somewhat premature with the announcement and the fixture is not confirmed. It is very unlikely to go ahead on the advertised date.

After the Welling encounter, Charlton will travel to the Malaga region of southern Spain for a training camp. By this time, Peeters will be hopeful of having most of 2014/15 squad assembled.

The Addicks will, as usual, play a couple of matches whilst in Spain. Last season they played a Gibralter XI and St Mirren. The format of one match against a local side and one against a British team may well be repeated.

Charlton are scheduled to fly back on Monday 21 July, which may explain why the game at Ebbsfleet has been put back 24 hours, to Wednesday 23 July.

The Conference South side faced a Charlton XI in the run up to the 2013/14 campaign, but the Addicks will field their first team this time around.

Ebbsfleet are managed by former Valley stalwart, Steve Brown, who has Steve Gritt as his assistant.

A week later, Peeters will take his team to Colchester and Charlton will finish their pre-season preparations at Portsmouth on Saturday 2 August.

The club are still hoping to arrange a game for Saturday 26 July, but thus far, no opponents have been found.
