There has been plenty of speculation about the next Valley boss over the last 24 hours. Former Sint-Truiden head coach, Chris O’Loughlin, was the early favourite, but others are now being mentioned.
Nigel Adkins – who was in the frame for the job in the summer – is thought to be on the wanted list.
Former Rotherham and Leeds boss, Steve Evans, is another rumoured with the vacancy. Evans is also wanted by Mansfield, and the Stags have arranged a press conference for Wednesday afternoon.
Recently dismissed Wigan manager, Gary Caldwell, entered the fray on Tuesday evening.
Russell Slade issued a brief statement on Tuesday. He said he was confident that, given time, he could have completed the job. He added that the club now needs a period of stability to take it back to where it belonged.
Slade’s assistant, Kevin Nugent, is still at the club, and could be in charge for Saturday’s match against Port Vale at The Valley, if a permanent appointment is not made during the week.
First team coach, Simon Clark, will be assisting Nugent at Sparrows Lane, and Johnnie Jackson could be involved on the coaching side.
Worryingly for Charlton, Josh Magennis picked up an injury on Tuesday. The striker had to be replaced after 55 minutes at Windsor Park.
