Charlton Athletic vs Wycombe Wanderers – Preview

On Sunday afternoon Charlton Athletic play their last game in 2024 when they host Wycombe Wanderers in a Sky Bet Division One match.

Mid-table Charlton will be playing their second home game of the festive season having hosted Cambridge United on Boxing Day. They claimed all three points, after a strong first half. Tyreece Campbell put the Addicks ahead in the first minute and Myles Leaburn headed home a second twenty minutes later. The visitors pulled one back after six minutes of the second half and hit the post on the hour mark. However, Charlton looked the more likely to score again after that, and were good value for their victory.

Title chasing Wycombe visited Stevenage on Boxing Day and won three-nil to remain in second place, one point behind Birmingham City. Richard Kone scored a first half brace and Beryly Lubala added the third midway through the second half.

At home, Charlton have won four, drawn four and lost two whilst Wycombe have enjoyed their travels with eight wins, three draws and just one defeat. Their last meeting was in April in Wycombe with the hosts winning one-nil, courtesy of an early Luke Leahy penalty.

Last season’s corresponding game at the Valley appeared to be heading for a draw until the Addicks scored two late goals. Leaburn opened the scoring for them just shy of the half hour mark however, Freddie Potts equalised for Wycombe nine minutes into the second period. Substitute Slobodan Tedic restored the hosts’ lead with seven minutes remaining and Corey Taylor added a third in stoppage time.

Although currently eleventh in the league table, Charlton are only three points behind the play-off places so a victory would put them in a good position ahead of the New Year.
