Charlton’s non-executive chairman and former owner, Richard Murray has resigned his role at The Valley due to ill health.

Murray has been involved with the club for 25 years, and was at the helm during their Premier League hey day. He released this statement on Monday:

“Over the past few weeks I have been having various tests regarding my health and it’s been discovered I have a number of malignant tumours in my stomach which require minor surgery at this stage.

“It is felt that I need to focus fully on my recovery so, with sadness, I am resigning my position as chairman of Charlton Athletic Football Club.

“I still have a great love for Charlton, which will stay with me always, although last season was very tough.

“I wish everyone at the club the best as we strive to get back to the Championship, and I look forward to returning to The Valley soon.”

League wise, the Addicks will be hoping it is a case of third time lucky when Shrewsbury visit The Valley on Tuesday evening.

‎The Shrews – like Charlton – have taken just a single point from their opening two games, and have yet to score a goal.

The Addicks turned in a decent second half performance on Saturday, and Russell Slade will be confident of getting his first win as Charlton boss.

Slade is unlikely to tinker too much with his line-up, as he seeks to bed his team in.

As long as Chris Solly’s knee can take a second game in three days, the defence is likely to be unchanged.

Slade will have to choose between Ezri Konsa, Roger Johnson and Patrick Bauer as Jason Pearce’s central defensive partner, but is likely to stick with Konsa.

Ricky Holmes suffered a bruised foot at Cheltenham last Tuesday, and was singled out for some robust treatment by Northampton on Saturday.

Despite this, Holmes is likely to be fit enough to start, though Ademola Lookman and Jordan Botaka will be pressing for starting places.

Josh Magennis is likely to hold off Lee Novak’s challenge, and looks set to continue up front with‎ Nicky Ajose.

The Addicks could line-up like this:

Rudd; Solly, Konsa, Pearce, Fox; Holmes, Foley, Crofts, Jackson; Magennis, Ajose.

Subs: Phillips, Johnson, Bauer, Holmes-Dennis, Botaka, Lookman, Novak.

‎The referee will be Surrey’s Gavin Ward.

Slade will be disappointed if his team fail to take three points from this game.
