There was the usual last game of the season pre-match party atmosphere at The Valley and they celebrated with a comfortable win.
Six Charlton legends were introduced to the crowd before kick-off and the club’s women’s, Under-21 and Under-18 team’s silverware was also paraded. Full credit to the Bristol City fans who gave the players warm applause as they carried their trophies in front of them.
David Button came in for injury victim, Ben Hamer, in goal with Nick Pope providing the back up on the bench. Pope made his league debut after Button injured himself trying to prevent Bristol City’s goal. Johhnie Jackson returned to partner Mark Gower in the centre of midfield with Jon Obika taking the place of the unwell Ricardo Fuller.
Rhoys Wiggins picked up an injury and had to be substituted after 15 minutes. Lawrie Wilson came on and went to right-back with Chris Solly switching to the left in an otherwise uneventful first half.
The second period exploded into life after just two minutes. A cross of real quality from Mark Gower was spectacularly volleyed home by Yann Kemorgant.
Five minutes later the Frenchman joined Jackson at the top of the scoring charts. A good through ball from Callum Harriott gave Solly the opportunity to deliver the perfect cross for Kermorgant to nod home.
The Robins halved the arrears just before the hour mark when Michael Morrison made a hash of a clearance that allowed Bobby Reid to lob Button. Button injured himself when he became entangled in the net trying to prevent the goal. He carried on for a few minutes before wisely being substituted.
The departing Scott Wagstaff replaced Harriott eleven minutes from time for his last game in Charlton colours. Wagstaff had only been on the pitch for a minute when the Addicks restored their two goal advantage. Kermorgant spotted an opportunity to complete his hat-trick but his audacious chip struck the underside of the bar and Obika headed home for a simple third.
A terrific pass from Gower five minutes from time, gave Bradley Pritchard the chance to tee up a goal for Jackson. The skipper made no mistake from close range and regained his place as the lone top scorer.
There was still time for Wagstaff to come desperately close to signing off with a goal but his well struck effort was cleared off the line.
So the curtain came down on a roller coaster season. The players embarked on their traditional lap of honour and Powell gave a speech before The Valley closed its doors for the summer.
