After so many early exits from cup competitions, the Valley faithful will be delighted with their team’s easy passage through to the second round of the Capital One Cup.
In truth, it was almost embarrassingly easy for the Addicks, with Ben Hamer having one of his quietest nights since joining the club.
Hamer was the only player from the side who faced Bournemouth, to start against Oxford.
The ten outfield changes saw Dale Stephens and Danny Hollands in tandem in central midfield, with Joe Pigott making his first team debut. Pigott partnered Simon Church up front and both players were to have something to celebrate.
The Addicks took the lead after 18 minutes. Green dummied on the edge of the box to allow the ball to run to Pigott. The youngster played the ball through to Church who finished with aplomb. Three minutes later Church turned provider but Danny Hollands spurned a glorious opportunity.
Oxford had their best moments just past the half hour mark when tricky winger, Ryan Williams, had a couple of opportunities, one requiring an acrobatic clearance from Leon Cort.
Charlton carried on with their patient passing game after the break and a sweeping move involving Wilson and Church which gave Hollands a chance that he headed over. The midfield was so much more fluid and cohesive than on Saturday.
The Addicks doubled their lead after 49 minutes. Green drove a fierce free-kick in from the right which was deflected in.
Five minutes later Green and Pigott combined to produce a chance for Church, but the Welshman fired wide.
Church was not to be denied a second goal for long though. After 57 minutes Stephens and Jordan Cook combined to set Church up and he rifled the ball home with his left foot. The hosts were threatening to run amok at this stage.
Both sides had penalty claims turned down late on for alleged handball.
Deep into stoppage time referee, Andy Davies, did point to the spot after substitute, Jordan Cousins, was clearly tripped in the box.
Green, Pigott and Marvin Sordell were all keen to take the penalty but eventually Pigott despatched the ball low to the keeper’s right and ran off to celebrate a scoring debut.
Even allowing for the status of the opposition, this was a thoroughly satisfactory performance and will give Chris Powell a few selection dilemmas as he ponders his team to face Middlesbrough.
