A game that had almost everything, including a touch of the bazaar. Occasionally a referee has to be replaced because of injury but it is rare for one of his assistants to need to be substituted.
A rule of the game that irks many is when a player is fouled he has to leave the field if he receives treatment on the pitch. Ricardo Fuller sustained an injury when he won the penalty that settled the game. Leaving the pitch is normally little more than an irritation but Fuller was Charlton’s nominated penalty taker.
Team wise, Ben Hamer returned in goal with Dorian Dervite replacing illness victim, Matt Taylor. Bradley Pritchard moved to the wide right berth with Andy Hughes taking his place as Johnnie Jackson’s partner. Up front, Ricardo Fuller was prefeered to Danny Haynes as Yann Kermorgant’s partner.
Bolton started brightly and could have been in front by the time Marvin Sordell opened the scoring in the fourth minute. Medo Kamara doubled the advantage after 20 minutes when his long range effort beat Hamer at his near post. Boos rang out around The Valley and it looked like being a long afternoon for the Addicks.
Five minutes later, Jackson started the revival when he latched on to some neat interplay to shoot beyond Andy Lonergan and just inside the far post.
The opening 20 minutes of the second half, just like the same period in the opening half, produced two goals but this time it was the hosts who scored them.
On the hour mark, Sam Rickett was sent off when he received a second yellow card for a foul on Fuller. Kermorgant’s splendid effort from the resulting free-kick came back off the post for Dervite to fire home.
Four minutes later Darren Pratley brought Fuller down in the area. Kermorgant thundered the penalty into the bottom right hand corner of Lonergan’s net.
The Addicks had to see out seven minutes of added on time to claim the three precious points.
