Where did that result come from? Football never ceases to surprise you. Charlton were like a team reborn, determined, aggressive and looking full of confidence.
Karel Fraeye lost Jordan Cousins,Conor McAleny and Tony Watt from the team he fielded at Milton Keynes but, surprisingly, Johann Berg Gudmundsson recovered and tokk his place.
Fraeye opted for a diamond midfield with Alou Diarra at the base, Gudmundsson at the tip, and El-Hadji Ba and Johnnie Jackson as the central duo.
Naby Sarr replaced Diarra in defence and Reza Ghoochannejhad
The Addicks were fast out of the blocks and were on top from the start, but suffered a setback midway through the half when Chris Solly had to go off. He received treatment, tried to carry on, but was wisely taken off a couple of minutes later.
Charlton scored their first goal in nearly eight hours in the 26th minute. A right-wing corner from Gudmundsson was met by a thundering header from Jackson. The skipper’s raw emotion was there for all to see in his celebration.
The Addicks doubled their lead on the stroke of half-time when Makienok scored from close range following a neat move down the left between Ghoochannejhad and Gudmundsson.
Charlton continued in the ascendancy after the break and increased their lead nine minutes after the restart. Makienok threaded the ball through to Fox who squared for Ghoochannejhad to bundle home from close range.
Gudmundsson nearly added a fourth when his 30-yard free-kick hit the bar.
Fernando Forestieri netted a consolation for the Owls after 73 minutes. A slip by Sarr allowed Kieran Lee cross to from the right, and Forestieri glanced the ball home.
There was a late cameo from Ademola Lookman to whet the fans’ appetite.
The result was a much needed tonic for Fraeye’s team, and they will be in good spirits as they go into the international break.
