What a turnaround this game was, the performance was as unexpected as it was a joy to watch.
Brentford have had their own troubles this week, with the uncertain future of manager, Mark Warburton, dominating the club’s news sites.
Charlton fielded a balanced side, with players utilised in their best positions. The Addicks were able to welcome Stephen Henderson back after a lengthy absence, and gave a debut to new signing, Roger Johnson, as Tal Ben Haim’s partner at the back.
Jordan Cousins and Johnnie Jackson were paired at the heart of midfield, with Frederic Bulot on the wide left.
Tony Watt and Igor Vetokele were the front duo.
Henderson added calmness and confidence to the defence and was called upon to make several good stops during the course of the game.
Johnson was vocal all afternoon and organised those around him. His influence was especially beneficial to Morgan Fox when he replaced calf injury victim, Rhoys Wiggins, halfway through the first half.
On the stroke of half-time, Johnson clashed with Andre Gray and kicked out at his opponent. Fortunately, Graham Scott did no more than speak to both players.
Johnnie Jackson had a fine game, prompting and probing, until he too succumbed to a calf injury at the end of the opening period.
Bulot looked far happier in his natural wide left berth and was a real handful for the Bees’ back line.
Watt and Vetokele combined well and the Scotsman kept going manfully, despite looking spent after an hour.
Guy Luzon got his line-up and tactics spot on and when he wavered, Damien Matthew was on hand to offer support.
After Vetokele netted the second, the head coach appeared to be urging his side to go into a more defensive system. Matthew remonstrated with Luzon and the Addicks continued to press forward.
Charlton took the lead after 27 minutes. Fox and Vetokele combined well on the left and Vetokele played Johann Gudmunsson in. The Icelandic international took a touch, before firing a shot across David Button and into the far corner.
Ten minutes after the interval, the Addicks had the rare luxury of a two goal lead. Fox won the ball in his own half and released Bulot on the left.
Bulot passed to Watt and as Button came out, the Scot unselfishly squared the ball, to present Vetokele with a simple chance.
Warburton responded three minutes later by making a triple substitution, but his side could not breech the resolute Charlton rear guard.
In stoppage time, a long clearance from Henderson set up Bulot, who cut in and despatched his shot into the far corner of Button’s goal. The strike sealed a comprehensive win for the hosts.
It was the first time the Addicks had won a league game by more than a single goal this season.
Luzon’s team looked confident from the first whistle and the Valley crowd played their part too. The fans will be hoping their team has finally turned the corner.
