The afternoon started with singer, Peter Straker, performing a couple of numbers on the pitch before singing ‘Red, Red Robin’ as the teams came out.

Straker was a close friend of Freddie Mercury and the Queen classic, ‘We Are The Champions’ was later to reverberate around The Valley when Charlton were confirmed as champions.

Scott Wagstaff started in place of Danny N’Guessan on the right with the Millwall loanee dropping to the bench. Lee Cook replaced Andy Hughes on the bench in an otherwise unchanged squad.

Wycombe were themselves desperate for the points to aid their fight against relegation. The game was an open affair with chances at either end.

The Addicks went ahead after 14 minutes with another stunning free-kick from Yann Kermorgant’s repertoire. Just left of centre, some 30 yards out, Kermorgant whipped the ball to Nikki Bull’s right and it went beyond the keeper’s despairing dive to nestle in the bottom corner.

Charlton threatened to run riot and Wright-Phillips spurned two glorious chances to double the hosts advantage.

As is so often the case when a side doesn’t take its chances, they are punished for their profligacy. Stuart Beavon nodded in a right-wing cross to restore parity for the visitors as the half drew to a close.

Wycombe had some good possession after the break and Hamer was called upon to make some smart saves to keep Wycombe at bay. Charlton fans were buoyed by the news that 10 man MK Dons were clinging on to their 1-0 lead over Sheffield United, meaning a draw would be enough for the Addicks to be crowned champions.

But things got even better for the home side. After 73 minutes Haynes – who had entered the fray to replace Wright-Phillips – and troubled the Chairboys back line with his pace, clipped in a cross from the left. Kermorgant, at the far post, headed back for the onrushing Dale Stephens to steer the ball into Bull’s bottom right-hand corner.

There was a nervy four minute wait at the final whistle before confirmation came through that MK Dons had defeated Sheffield United.

The tannoy belted out ‘We Are The Champions’ as the team and fans celebrated for the second successive week.

Heady days indeed at The Valley.
