Chris Powell fielded the same team and bench that had served him so well at Barnsley and Cardiff during the past week. The Valley

Powell lost both his central midfielders to injury during the course of the afternoon.

Andy Hughes was replaced by Mark Gower in the twelfth minute and Johnnie Jackson had to leave the fray just past the hour mark. Bradley Pritchard awitched to the middle to partner Gower with Danny Green filling the wide right berth.

The first half was a poor spectacle and it was hard to believe the game was important to both sides as it had a real end of season feel to it. The only notable action saw Karl Henry’s 40-yard shot beat Ben Hamer, bouce down and out off the underside of the bar.

The urgency, if not not the quality, was upped after the break. Charlton took the lead with a scrappy goal after 63 minutes. A poor, underhit corner from Green was miskicked by the defender on the near post. The ball fell kindly for Ricardo Fuller, whose effort was hacked off the line. The clearance only went as far as Dorian Dervite who rifled the Addicks into the lead from close range.

The Valley’s joy was short lived however. Just three minutes late, Kevin Doyle’s looping header crept in at the far post.

Once again, Jonathan Obika proved to be the late match winner.Danny Green’s shot was blocked and Obika smashed the loose ball home from close range with his left foot.

The result keeps Charlton’s faint play-off hopes alive and leaves Wolves Championship future precariously balanced.
