Charlton Athletic 2-1 Rochdale

Charlton Athletic came from behind to win 2-1 against Rochdale at The Valley on Tuesday evening.

Karl Robinson named an unchanged starting XI, with Patrick Bauer and ‎Reeco Hackett-Fairchild replacing Anfernee Dijksteel andTariqe Fosu on the bench.

The Addicks were not at their best in a first half that was punctuated with a series of niggling fouls by the visitors.‎

Rochdale stunned the home crowd when they took a 13th minute lead.

A left-wing cross was steered into the far corner by Matthew Gillam, and Dale nearly doubled their lead eight minutes later.

Matthew Done took advantage of hesitation between ‎Ben Amos and Ezri Konsa, to steal the ball and fire a shot against the inside of the post.

Karl Robinson’s team drew level ten minutes before the interval. A ball in from the left was headed on by Naby Sarr, and Jake Forster-Caskey was on hand to turn it over the line from close range.

Robinson replaced Ben Reeves with Karlan Ahearne-Grant at the interval. The second period was a much livelier affair and both sides went close in the first few minutes.

Mark Marshall teed up Ahmed Kashi, who hit the post from the edge of the box.

Then Amos produced a wonder save to tip over an Ian Henderson header.

But it was Charlton who took the lead on the hour mark. Marshall tried his luck from the edge of the area, Joshua Lillis spilled it, and Forster-Caskey latched on to the loose ball to score his second goal of the night.

As the game became stretched, both sides had chances. Marshall shot when he should have played Magennis in, Magennis hit the roof of the net from a Marshall pass, and Ahearne-Grant’s header from Magennis’ cross was saved by Lillis.

Substitute, Bradden Inman, went closest for Dale‎. It took a great save by Amos to foil him.

This was far from a vintage performance by the Addicks, but there are times when a team has to grind out results. Robinson will not be happy with his team’s performance, but will be delighted by their character and persistence.

The win moved Charlton up to fourth in the table, and stretched their unbeaten run in the league to nine.
