Charlton Athletic 2-1 Leeds United

A sunny afternoon at The Valley looked as though it was going to deliver a disappointing result to the Addicks at the interval.

Enter Johann Berg Gudmundsson, cue standing the game on its head.

Guy Luzon again made changes to freshen his squad up, this time Rhoys Wiggins, Roger Johnson, Johann Gudmundsson and Jordan Cousins were given a break, with Morgan Fox, Joe Gomez, Tal Ben Haim and Chris Eagles coming in.

Cousins’ respite was brief though, he replaced Alou Diarra after just eleven minutes when the Frenchman suffered a knee ligament injury.

At Bolton on Tuesday, Charlton dominated the first-half, only to be put on the back foot after the break.

This time, they were sluggish early on but turned things around in the second half.

Luke Murphy and Sam Byram had early chances for Leeds, while the Addicks came closest when a Ben Haim drive was deflected onto the post by Igor Vetokele.

Ten minutes before the break, the visitors spurned a golden opportunity to take the lead. Byram was tripped by Ben Haim in the area and referee, Tony Harrington, had no hesitation in pointing to the spot.

Billy Sharp took the kick but Stephen Henderson dived to his left to tip the ball onto the post. Charlton scrambled the ball to safety but their let off was brief.

Five minutes later, Steve Morison volleyed a right-wing corner, and despite Henderson diving full length to get a hand on the ball, he could not keep Morison’s effort out.

In truth, it was no more than the visitors deserved, and Luzon would have been pleased to get his team back in the dressing room without further mishap.

Predictably, Gudmundsson was summoned to add creativity. Vetokele, Buyens and Bulot had chances but the Addicks had to wait until sixteen minutes from time to restore parity.

Creator-in-chief, Gudmundsson, crossed from the right and Tony Watt hammered a tremendous volley past Stuart Taylor.

Five minutes later, the hosts were in front. Gudmundsson embarked on one of his mazy runs from the right and despatched a rasping shot which Taylor could only parry.

Vetokele latched onto the rebound, only to be felled by Taylor for the second penalty of the afternoon.

Yoni Buyens stepped up, waited for Taylor to move, then slotted the spot-kick home with his usual aplomb.

Neil Redfearn made a couple of late substitutions to try to salvage something from the game, but the Whites were unable to fashion an equaliser, and slumped to their fifth successive defeat.

The win propelled Luzon’s team to tenth in the table with two games to go.
