Much has been made of Charlton not winning at The Valley since last May but they have not fared much better on their travels either.
Wins at Ipswich in September, Blackpool in October and Burnley in mid November are the only Saturday triumphs the Addicks have enjoyed this season.
It was ironic then, that they completed their first double of the season against Blackpool….and on a Saturday too. Steve Thompson was in charge of the Seasiders following Michael Appleton’s departure to Lancashire rivals Blackburn yesterday.
Chris Powell went for a 4-3-2-1 formation with wide midfielders, Lawrie Wilson and Scott Wagstaff, pushed futher forward than the central trio. It was Wagstaff’s first senior action since the season’s opener against Leyton Orient back in August. On the basis of this game, it’s hard to understand why Wagstaff has been ignored for so long. Powell probably opted for this system to match up with Blackpool, who used the same shape.
Charlton made their usual slow start and should have gone behind after just two minutes. A cross to the far post by Nathan Delfouneso presented veteran striker, Kevin Phillips, with a close range header. Phillips put his effort beyond the reach of Ben Hamer’s right hand but Matt Taylor – who slotted back into the team seamlessly – scrambled the ball away via the post.
The Addicks took the lead midway though the half. Wagstaff took advantage of a poor clerance to feed Chris Solly who crossed for Johnnie Jackson to steer the ball home with his right foot.
The hosts doubled their advantage in stoppage time at the end of the half. Kermorgant played the ball out to Wilson on the right, then met the resulting cross with a thunderous header that Matt Gilks could only Parry. Fortunately for Charlton, Wagstaff was on hand to slot home the rebound.
Blackpool started the second period brightly but were unable to breach the Addicks rearguard. Callum Harriott had an impressive late cameo when he replaced Wagstaff. Blackpool brought Nathan Eccleston on as a late substitute and the former Charlton loanee was given a warm reception by the home fans. Eccleston netted a stoppage time consolation for the visitors with a volley from the edge of the box.
The Addicks will be hoping their back-to-back winning start to 2013 will continue and propel them into the play-off zone.
