What a difference two days make. Just 48 hours after losing their composure and a London derby to Leyton Orient, Charlton reaffirmed their promotion credentials with a thoroughly professional victory over another near-neighbour.
The kick-off was delayed by 15 minutes due to ‘unforseen circumstances’ or put another way, there was a power failure in the North Upper. Certain sections of the crowd were moved elsewhere before the second-half started.
Two games in three days are difficult for managers, the body does not have time to recover properly and team selection has to reflect the physical condition of the players as much as their ability.
Ben Hamer was able to play due to the club lodging an appeal against his red card, while Matt Taylor moved to the bench as Leon Cort partnered Michael Morrison. Danny Green returned to midfield and was joined by Bradley Pritchard, who made his first league start for the club.
Brentford are a physical side who can play a good passing game with Jon Douglas pulling the strings in midfield. The Bees had the better of the opening exchanges but fell behind just past the half hour mark. A long throw from Danny Green was headed out, then headed back in by Danny Hollands. Richard Lee slipped slightly, giving Michael Mirrison the opportunity to steal a march and nod it over the advancing keeper. Morrison was brave, kept his eye on the ball even though he knew he would be clattered.
The game was never a great spectacle but was one where the result was all important. Jackson headed against the post after the break and Wright-Phillips steered the rebound wide. The out-of-form striker was later to make way for new signing, Leon Clarke.
Charlton sealed the points in the last minute. A long clearance was helped on its way by Hollands to Green. The returning winger showed great composure to skip inside and roll the ball into an unguarded net.
Chris Powell now has a few days to assess his squad’s condition before naming the team to play Fulham. He will also have one eye on the transfer window but will be bouyed by his side’s return to winning ways.
