Blackburn completed a hat-trick of wins against the Addicks this season in a game riddled with errors.
All four goals could be attributed to defensive mistakes and unfortunately for the Valley faithful, the home side made more than their visitors.
Team wise, Tal Ben Haim returned to the starting line-up at the expense of Joe Gomez who dropped to the bench, and Igor Vetokele replaced Christophe Lepoint.
Lepoint failed to even make the bench, much to the disappointment of a group of fans in the West Stand who had come over from Belgium especially to watch him.
The Charlton team of 1968/69 were introduced to the crowd prior to kick-off but their presence failed to inspire the current group.
Rovers were in midweek action but looked the brighter of the two sides early on and scored twice in the first twenty minutes, leaving the Addicks with a mountain to climb.
Chris Solly nudged the ball out of play after 15 minutes and Blackburn took advantage.
A quick throw to Jordan Rhodes caught Charlton napping. The striker cut in from the left and fired past Stephen Henderson and into the net via the far post.
Three minutes later, a slip by Roger Johnson let Craig Conway in. Conway advanced and placed the ball past Henderson’s right hand and into the far corner.
Charlton gradually clawed their way into the game and Tony Watt and Vetokele had shots, but the hosts had their best chance in stoppage time at the end of the half.
A scramble in the box saw Rovers having to block three efforts.
The Addicks were thrown a lifeline ten minutes into the second period. Vetokele broke into the area, headed over Jason Steele, and was then felled by the keeper.
Charles Breakspear had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Yoni Buyens despatched the penalty with his customary aplomb.
The goal lit the fuse for Charlton and the home side twice came within a whisker of levelling things up.
First, Vetokele met a left-wing cross with a looping header that hit the bar with Steele beaten.
Then neat interplay between Watt and Vetokele released the Scotsman who put his shot just the wrong side of the near post.
The Addicks profligacy was punished twelve minutes from time by the predatory Rhodes.
A blocked shot looped up over a static Charlton back line and was headed home by Rhodes.
Rhodes glanced across at the linesman to check he was not offside before wheeling away in celebration.
Substitute, Chris Eagles, went close with a header a minute from time, but Guy Luzon will be ruing the errors that cost his side so dear.
