Charlton slumped to a third consecutive defeat against Ipswich. Chris Powell fielded an attacking looking side with Danny Green and Danny Haynes on the flanks, Rob Hulse and Ricardo Fuller up front, and there was a return in midfield for Dale Stephens.
The Addicks were poor in the first half and the Tractor Boys took full advantage. The visitors should have gone ahead after 17 minutes when an ill judged tackle by Manny Frimpong on Lee Martin saw the visitors awarded a spot-kick.
DJ Campbell put the penalty wide of Hamer’s right hand post. Martin was at the heart of all Ipswich’s better moments and gave Chris Solly a torrid afternoon.
Charlton’s best effort came after 33 minutes when Dale Stephens’ free-kick struck the upright. Just a minute later though, the visitors took the lead. Lee Martin’s cross was hooked back at the far post by Daryl Murphy for Campbell to steer inside Hamer’s left hand post.
Worse was to follow on the stroke of half-time when Stephens was robbed and Murphy was given the chance to double the advantage.
Powell responded with two changes at the beginning of the second half. Jackson and Pritchard replaced Frimpong and Green.
Pritchard had a fine game and the Addicks were a better outfit after the break. Their only reward though was a 72nd penalty – awarded when Martin felled Solly in the box – converted by Danny Haynes.
Powell will be desperate to turn his team’s fortunes around when Derby visit the The Valley on Saturday.
