Coventry launched a late smash and grab raid to take all thee points, and leave Lee Bowyer scratching his head, wondering how his team had lost.
Bowyer made two enforced changes from the team that lost at Scunthorpe on Tuesday evening – Anfernee Dijksteel replacing injury victim Lewis Page, and Ben Reeves returning in place of the suspended Darren Pratley.
The defence featured Dijksteel at right-back, Jason Pearce and Naby Sarr as the central defenders, with Chris Solly on the left.
The Addicks had two gilt edge chances in the first period. Karlan Grant was foiled by Lee Burge. The ball fell invitingly for Tariqe Fosu six yards out, but Tom Davies somehow cleared the midfielder’s effort off the line.
Then a peach of a cross from the left found Lyle Taylor unmarked, but the striker’s header was initially saved by Burge. The ball slipped from the keeper’s grasp, but he managed to claw it back before it crossed the line.
Just when it appeared the teams would go into the break on level terms, Charlton took the lead. in stoppage time. Taylor cut into the area from the right, only to be tripped by Junior Brown.
Taylor took the penalty himself, and gave Burge no chance, as he thumped it past the keeper’s right hand.
Though Coventry had some good spells in the second period, the Addicks still enjoyed the better of things.
Substitute Amadou Bakayoko made the difference. First, he bundled in the equaliser after 81 minutes, then he sent the large away following delirious, when he scored the winner in stoppage time.
The result will be hugely frustrating to Bowyer. His team have taken one point from the last nine, he will feel his side should have had won all
three games.
