Another hugely disappointing result for the Addicks at The Valley as fellow relegation candidates, Barnsley, left with all three points.

Jose Riga rang the changes in his line-up for the game. Chris Solly and Richard Wood replaced Lawrie Wilson and Michael Morrison in defence, with Jonathan Obika and Callum Harriott coming in for Simon Church and Reza Ghoochannejhad at the front.

Charlton dominated the early procedings and had two gilt edged chances before the half hour mark.

First, Wood failed  to make the right connection from a corner and then Callum Harriott got his header horribly wrong when Marvin Sordell picked him out from the left.

Jean-Yves M’voto showed the Addicks duo how it should be done when his thunderous header from a left-wing corner gave Barnsley the lead against the run of play.

Harriott was struggling to make any impression on the right and Riga replaced him with Ghoochannejhad after 55 minutes.

Eight minutes later Charlton were given a mountain to climb when Tom Kennedy clipped in the second for the visitors from the acutest of angles.

Riga’s woes continued when his side were reduced to ten men six minutes from the end,  Rhoys Wiggins limping out with a serious looking leg injury.

In the first of the five added minutes, the Addicks were handed a lifeline. Following a shot being blocked by Ghoochannejhad, Astrit Ajdarevic’s effort was hacked away by a defender but the ball was adjudged to have crossed the line.

Try as they may, Charlton could not fashion an equaliser. The win moves the Tykes to within two points of the Addicks, though they have played a game more.
