Charlton Athletic 1-1 Tranmere Rovers

Charlton had to come from behind to secure a point against Tranmere at The Valley on Saturday.

The game always looked as though it was going to be a tight affair with one goal being enough to secure the three points.

So the outlook was decidedly gloomy when Adam McGurk fired the visitors in front just past the half-hour mark. Tranmere’s five man midfield, with the giant Enoch Showumni as the lone striker, caused Charlton no end of problems.

Green and Kermorgant came in for Wagstaff and Hayes, who had to settle for spots on the bench.

Tranmere were the better side in the opening period and worked their socks off all afternoon. McGurk’s goal was deflected off Chris Solly but Hamer was poorly positioned and was beaten at his near post. Charlton’s main threat looked to be down the left, where Wiggins and Jackson combined well.

The Addicks upped the tempo after the break and gradually got a foothold in the match with their tippy-tappy passing game.

They got their reward ten minutes from time when referee, Darren Drysdale, awarded a penalty for an offence in crowded area, following a right-wing corner. Tranmere were incensed with the decision and their gamesmanship delayed the taking of the spot-kick by well over a minute. Johnnie Jackson held his nerve to send Fon Williams the wrong way and slam the ball into the right-hand corner.

Charlton pressed on and should have sealed the win late on. Wright-Phillips failed to capitalise on a free-kick routine, which presented him with a clear sight of goal from close in.

A disappointing result against awkward opponents but the manager will have been pleased with the character his side showed.
