A blistering start by the Addicks when a powerful Bradley Wright-Phillips effort from the edge of the box screamed into the net after just three minutes.

Good work by skipper, Johnnie Jackson, down the left allowed Paul Hayes to put Wright-Phillips in.

Wright-Phillips’ return to fitness allowed Scott Wagstaff to return to the right flank in place of virus victim, Danny Green. Green’s contribution could have been vital as the Addicks were drawn into an attritional battle after the break.

Leon Cort was amongst the substitutes on the bench. Charlton went on to totally dominate the first period but spurned a golden opportunity to extend their lead after 17 minutes. Wright-Phillips’ cross shot fell invitingly for Dale Stephens who blasted over from 12 yards.

Gary Megson made what appeared to be a tactical change after 22 minutes when he abandoned his 4-5-1 formation for a more conventional 4-4-2 shape. New signing, Ryan Lowe, being introduced for Chris Sedgwick.

Lowe himself had to be replaced in the 53rd minute when he was unable to continue. Lowe’s replacement, Clinton Morrison, was to prove pivotal in salvaging a point for the Owls. Just three minutes after coming on, Morrison applied the finishing touch to a right-wing corner, his header going in via the underside of the bar with Charlton keeper Ben Hamer claiming he was impeded.

Wednesday’s more physical approach took the initiative from the hosts, although a set play was always their most likely chance of scoring.

Megson’s more aggressive game plan saw his team pick up a number of bookings with Jose Semedo being one of the offenders. Semedo was withdrawn after 74 minutes, seemingly to prevent him picking up a red card.

Chris Powell will feel frustrated with dropping two points but the game was crying out for him to change things around long before Jason Euell’s 78th minute introduction. He will be demanding 3 points when Exeter come calling on Saturday.
