Charlton Athletic 1-1 Huddersfield Town

An awful day at The Valley saw the game against Huddersfield played on a drenched surface with rain pouring down all afternoon.

Charlton may have Lawrie Wilson available sooner than many anticipated. Speaking ahead of the game, he told me that he will start full training on Monday but had been keeping fit on the weight bearing machines at Sparrows Lane. Wilson expects to be available for selection at Millwall.

Charlton had to play Salim Kerkar at left-back after Danny Seaborne picked up a knock on training during the week. Johnnie Jackson moved to the left flank, allowing Emmanuel Frimpong to start alongside Dale Stephens in the middle. Hamstring victim, Danny Haynes, was replaced by Ricardo Fuller and there was a welcome return on the bench for cult hero, Yann Kermorgant.

The Addicks could have gone behind inside the first two minutes. Jackson hacked an effort off the line but his clearance fell kindly for the visitors but Peter Clarke fired wastefully over.

The visitors were reduced to ten men after 34 minutes. Michael Morrison strode into the Terriers half and contested a ball with Keith Southern. Morrison won the ball but was caught late by Southern. Referee, Lee Collins, deemed the challenge reckless and dismissed the Huddersfield midfielder.

The opening goal came on the hour mark. Jackson fed Fuller who picked out Bradley Pritchard on the right. Pritchard’s cross gave Rob Hulse the simplest of chances to put the hosts ahead.

Frimpong had been the dominant player in midfield but his afternoon was to come to an end midway through the second period with what looked like cramp.

The game became more even after the Arsenal loanee’s departure but the Addicks appeared to have seen the game out. However, they were caught out two minutes from time when Ben Hamer failed to deal with a cross from the right. Chris Solly was penalised for a high challenge and Lee Collins pointed to the spot. Adam Clayton made no mistake, putting the ball to Hamer’s right to earn his team a share of the spoils.
