Over the years, Johnnie Jackson has made a habit of delivering a vital goal when his team needs one. Jackson added another entry to his impressive catalogue of match winning strikes on Saturday afternoon. The Valley

Chris Powell made changes in all sections of his team, possibly with Monday’s FA Cup encounter against SheffieldWednesday at Hillsborough in mind.

Dorian Dervite and Rhoys Wiggins returned to the defence, Danny Green got a rare start in midfield and Simon Church was restored to the frontline.

Harry Redknapp went with three at the back, often six in midfield and just Kevin Doyle up front.

Rangers, though technically gifted, rarely caused the Addicks problems. The visitors best chance came through a Charlton mistake.

The hosts came desperately close to taking the lead after thirteen minutes. Jordan Cousins fizzed in a shot from the edge of the box which hit Robert Green’s left-hand post. The rebound fell kindly for Reza Ghoochannejhad who steered the ball onto the other post and Rangers were able to scramble the ball away.

The Hoops thought they had won a penalty two minutes before the half hour mark when Nedum Onuoha went over Dervite’s outstretched leg. Referee, Eddie Ilderton, waved play on, presumably believing that Onuoha had gone looking for the foul.

Powell made a double substitution after 64 minutes, replacing Ghoochannejhad and Green with Marcus Tudgay and Astrit Ajdarevic. The duo – particularly Ajdarevic – were influential in changing the course of the game, though Charlton had to survive a scare thirteen from time before they secured the win.

Dervite’s back pass did Yohann Thuram-Ulien no favours and the keeper’s clearance went straight to Madibo Maiga. Maiga rounded Thuram-Ulien but could not keep the ball in play.

The Addicks cranked up the tempo as the game neared its denouement and both Tudgay and Ajdarevic had efforts blocked. Ajdarevic’s shot in stoppage time, was clawed away by Green at the expense of a corner.

The Swedish midfielder took the corner himself and found Jackson beyond the far post. From the acutest of angles, the skipper nodded the ball down and the bounce took it into the roof of the net.

Delirium, not to mention relief, unashamedly broke out amongst players and fans alike. Jackson was booked in the aftermath of the celebrations for going to the crowd.

The result was just the fillip Powell and his team needed as they enter a relentless end to the season.
