A game that really came to life in the last ten minutes.
First Church, then Jackson went desperately close in the 80th minute. Then a fierce Poyet effort was saved by Lee Camp before the stoppage time finale.
Jon Obika was brought down just outside the penalty area on the left hand side. Johnnie Jackson’s well struck effort was turned over by Camp.
Jackson took the corner himself and Dorian Dervite thundered an unstoppable header to Camp’s left.
Cue mass pandemonium on the pitch and in the stands. The coolest man in the stadium was Jose Riga, who was urging his team to stay calm and concentrate.
Seconds later the final whistle sounded and Jackson and Ben Hamer took on Chris Powell’s role as celebratory tunnel jumpers.
Riga freshened his squad up as the relentless schedule of games continued. Back came Danny Green, Jordan Cousins, and Simon Church.
Astrit Ajdarevic’s back injury kept him out and Reza Ghoochannejhad did not feature either.
Addicks old boys, Simon Francis and Harry Arter started for Bournemouth and Yann Kermorgant received a huge ovation when he entered the fray after an hour.
The Cherries played neat football and were the brighter of the two sides early on and Riga’s 4-5-1 formation, with Jackson pushing on, was not proving effective. Riga changed to 4-4-2 after 41 minutes when he replaced Callum Harriott with Obika.
After 65 minutes Riga went even more adventurous, replacing Green with Marvin Sordell, and switching to a 4-3-3 formation.
The win lifts the Addicks out of the drop zone, though Yeovil picked up an unexpected point in a thrilling 3-3 draw at Wigan.
Chants of, “Jose Riga’s red army” took to the air during the course of the evening. The king is dead, long live the king seemingly the message from the Valley faithful.
