Charlton grabbed a vital three points against Blackburn at The Valley on Saturday afternoon.
Ahmed Kashi’s shot entered the net via Jason Pearce’s backside to send the home fans into rapture.
Rovers had the better of the second period, but stoic defending saw the Addicks hang on for the win. With both Plymouth and Scunthorpe also winning, it was a vital three points for Lee Bowyer’s side.
They go into next week’s match at Rochdale with their fate in their own hands.
Bowyer made just one change from the side that won at Portsmouth last week, Mark Marshall coming in for the injured Tariqe Fosu.
The decisive moment came after 19 minutes. A free-kick was cleared to Kashi on the edge of the box.
The midfielder’s fierce drive was deflected in off Pearce’s backside, leaving Jason Leutwiler wrong footed.
Charlton had to dig in after the break but defended doggedly. Lewis Page flung himself in front of Adam Armstrong’s blast after 47 minutes, and Mark Marshall completed the clearance.
Unfortunately, Page was injured in the incident and had to be stretchered off.
Rovers came even closer after 78 minutes when substitute, Danny Graham, struck the underside of the bar with a header from a corner.
Three minutes later, Amos had to make a smart stop to foil Dominic Samuel, but Bowyer’s side saw the game out without mishap.
Scunthorpe entertain Plymouth on Tuesday, so the Addicks will know exactly what they have to do when they pitch up at Spotland next Saturday.
