Charlton gained a hard fought three points at The Valley on Saturday afternoon, thanks to an incredible free-kick from Ricky Holmes 12 minutes from time.
The game was no classic, but the Addicks stuck doggedly to their task. Sometimes a team has to grind out a result, and Karl Robinson’s side are capable of doing that if they have to.
Robinson made one change from the team that won a t Bradford last week, with Jay Dasilva returning at left-back. Naby Sarr dropped to the bench.
Mark Marshall was also on the bench, with Karlan Ahearne-Grant dropping out.
In a poor first-half, Charlton had one off target shot from Tariqe Fosu, and just a single corner. They could have had a penalty after 25 though, when Jimmy Abdou appeared to body check Fosu in the area.
The Addicks showed more urgency after the break without creating any really clear cut chances.
The home side were awarded a free-kick on the left hand edge of the area, about ten yards from the byline, after 78 minutes.
Barry Fuller chopped Holmes down as he was advancing into the area, and was shown a yellow card by referee, Ben Toner.
From an impossible looking angle, Holmes whipped the ball into the far corner of the net, beyond the despairing dive of George Long.
It was appropriate that the one moment of real quality in the game was enough to take the three points.
Charlton remain in fourth place, level on points with Bradford.
Shrewsbury lost for the first time this season at Peterborough. The Addicks are now seven points behind the leaders with a game in hand.
They now have a two week break from League One action.
