Sean Dyche is an archetypal English manager, his teams are solid, strong, powerful and consistent.
Jose Riga is a very technical continental style coach, so the game was always going to be a clash of styles. On the day, Dyche’s side had too much in the locker for Riga’s troops.
Burnley have lost just three games all season and have continued to flourish despite losing star striker, Danny Ings.
Charlton acquitted themselves well in the early stages and had a glorious opportunity to open the scoring after 26 minutes. Michael Duff’s control let him down, allowing Simon Church a clear run on goal. Church seemed to rush his shot and his weak effort failed to trouble Tom Heaton in the Burnley goal.
Moments later, the Addicks could have paid dearly for Church’s profligacy. Sam Vokes teed up Scott Arfield , but Arfield’s attempt was easily dealt with by Ben Hamer.
The Clarets upped the pace as the half neared its end and took the lead seven minutes before the break. Junior Stanislas’ left-wing cross was nodded home by Ashley Barnes in front of the travelling Burnley fans.
It took a top notch stop from Hamer to deny Chris Baird adding a second soon after.
Riga replaced Danny Green with Astrit Ajdarevic at the interval but ten minutes into the second period, the visitors virtually sealed the game. Dorian Dervite was adjudged to have tripped Vokes inside the area. The Welsh striker converted the penalty himself.
It was the visitors who got a stoppage time goal in this game, to register a 3-0n scoreline. Michael Kightly cut in from the left and tried his luck from an acute angle. The ball entered the net via a deflection off Johnnie Jackson.
The Addicks remain just outside the drop zone but will be desperate to get some sort of result at the City Ground on Tuesday.
