Charlton Athletic 0-3 Burnley
It was perhaps inevitable that an infinitely forgettable‎ season should end with yet another 3-0 defeat.
Charlton v Burnley

The final whistle also signalled the end of Jose Riga’s second tenure at The Valley. The head coach resigned immediately after the game ended.

Despite the heavy police presence, a net in front of the covered end and a100‎% bag search, there were still numerous disruptions to the match.

Toilet rolls, paper planes and smoke bombs found their way on to the playing area. A protester also got onto the pitch, and both sets of fans staged an invasion at the final whistle.

It created a surreal atmosphere, unbridled joy for one one group, venomous anger for the other.

Referee, Roger East, wisely called a halt to proceedings after 90 minutes, playing no added time.

Charlton matched Burnley in the first half, but paid the price for profligate finishing. It was a different matter after the break though, two early strikes by the visitors ended the game as a contest.

After 20 minutes, Sam Vokes had the simple task of poking home a Scott Arfeld ‎cross at the far post.

George Boyd was left unmarked‎ to rifle home a Stephen Ward cross after 49 minutes, and two minutes later, Andre Gray chased down a long ball to slot past Nick Pope.

‎Johann Berg Gudmundsson was at the heart of Charlton’s best attacking moves, and the home side’s best chances fell to Jordan Cousins, Gudmundsson, Callum Harriott and Morgan Fox.

Riga’s side’s best moment came after‎ 37 minutes. A sweeping move down the right involving Nick Pope, Gudmundsson and Ademola Lookman, presented Harriott with a gilt edged opportunity, but he was foiled by Tom Heaton.

The Addicks have much to do over the summer, with the first job being to find a new manager.

The name on everyone’s lips before the game was Northampton’s Chris Wilder.
