The day was always going to be about Bournemouth and the Cherries did not fluff their lines.

Bournemouth champs

They dominated proceedings from start to finish and ran out comfortable winners.

Bournemouth had added joy late on, when two stoppage time goals by Sheffield Wednesday at Vicarage Road, meant Eddie Howe’s team were crowned champions at The Valley.

Charlton fans were generous in their applause for the visitors’ achievements  and former Addick, Yann Kermorgant, went off to raptorous applause from all sides of the ground when he was replaced by Kenwyn Jones late on.

Both skipper, Johnnie Jackson, and head coach, Guy Luzon, gave speeches at the end and Addicks fans will be hoping that it will be their turn to celebrate next May.

All the early pressure came from the Cherries and they took a two goal lead inside the first twelve minutes.

Kermorgant fed Matt Ritchie after ten minutes, and the winger curled a sweet strike into the net via the far post.

A slip by Yoni Buyens two minutes later let Harry Arter in to put the ball past Stephen Henderson.

Igor Vetokele appeared to aggravate his Achilles injury six minutes before the break and had to be replaced by Simon Church.

Charlton eventually finished the match with ten men, when Tony Watt limped off and all three substitutes had been used.

Ritchie notched the third goal five minutes from time after the Addicks failed to clear their lines.

Following the speeches and Charlton’s traditional last game walk round the pitch,  Bournemouth received the Football League’s trophy and the celebrations began in earnest.

For the Addicks, it will be a busy summer. There will be the usual comings and goings as Luzon assembles his squad for the 2015/16 campaign.

The close season seems to get ever shorter and the fixtures for the new campaign will be released in little more than six weeks.
