Charlton Athletic 0-2 Doncaster Rovers

Two second half Doncaster goals were enough to send Charlton tumbling out of the FA Cup at a grey and wet Valley on Saturday afternoon.

‎Rovers fielded a full strength line-up, whereas Lee Bowyer made nine changes to the team that won at Burton on Tuesday.

The manager again o‎pted to play a diamond midfield, with Taylor Maloney at the base, George Lapslie and Ben Reeves in the middle, and Billy Clarke at the tip.

Dillon Phillips was behind a makeshift back four of Mark Marshall,‎ Anfernee Dijksteel, Naby Sarr and Toby Stevenson.

Reeco Hackett-Fairchild and Nicky Ajose were the front runners.

The game was an ordinary affair that sprung into life during the final quarter, with two goals and some outstanding saves by both keepers.

Grant McCann’s side went in front midway through the second period in bizarre circumstances.

Rovers won a corner on the left following a miscued clearance by Reeves. Andy Butler headed it goalwards. Marshall managed to get his head on the ball, but could only turn it past Phillips.

Ten minutes later John Marquis doubled the visitors’ advantage when he headed home a ball from the left from virtually on the line.

Marshall‎’s bullet header was well saved by Ian Lawlor, and that was as close as the Addicks came to scoring.

In time honoured tradition, they are now free to concentrate on the league!
