It was a dramatic afternoon for Ipswich’s Hunt brothers. Both were due to be on Mick McCarthy’s bench but an injury sustained in the warm-up by Luke Hyam saw Stephen Hunt promoted to the starting line-up.
Noel Hunt – signed on loan from Leeds on Thursday – came on as a substitute and scored the winner deep into stoppage time.
Yoni Buyens hamstring problem ruled him out and his place went to Callum Harriott. Igor Vetokele was fit enough to start and was partnered up front by Harriott as Bob Peeters reverted to his favoured 4-4-2 formation.
Johnnie Jackson won the toss and, rather unusually, decided to attack the Covered End in the first half.
The game was an open affair with both sides having early chances.
Harriott, Jordan Cousins, Morgan Fox, Chris Solly and Johann Gudmundsson all had decent chances during the course of the afternoon.
Ipswich also had their chances and scored the decisive goal deep into added on time.
The Tractor Boys launched a counter attack when Tal Ben Haim lost the ball on a forward foray.
Charlton failed to clear their lines, the ball fell to David McGoldrick who slipped it to Noel Hunt. Hunt drilled a precision shot beyond Nick Pope’s right hand and just inside the far post.
The away support erupted in ecstasy, a late, late winner is the sweetest feeling in football. For the vanquished, there is a feeling of utter despair.
Bob Peeters laid the blame firmly at the door of his players and had this to say at his post match press conference:
“We only have ourselves to blame, we created enough chances and had enough possibilities to win at least one, maybe two games and it’s about finishing that last ball off.
“Then, in the 94th minute, if your centre back thinks he can dribble in the middle of the park and try to score a goal and get cocky, they punish you.
“We got a lesson today, in every aspect of football we were the better team. We passed the ball better and had better movement while they only kicked long balls but it’s about putting the ball in the net and that’s what they did, and that’s why they’re up there and we are not.
“You can play good football and be pleasing the fans, but if you think in the 94th minute you can start dribbling as a centre back – especially one of my most experienced players – then it’s unforgivable.”
Public criticism of a player is rarely a good ploy and it is to be hoped that Ben Haim is not soured by the incident. The Israeli’s partnership with Andre Bikey has been the bedrock of Peeters’ successful start to the season.
