Charlton’s annual ‘Football For A Fiver’ match against FA Cup holders, Wigan, attracted a crowd of 23,600 to The Valley on Sunday. The Valley

Latics keeper, Scott Carson, damaged his knee in the warm up and had to be replaced by Lee Nicholls. Another keeper returning to The Valley was Nick Pope. Pope has been on loan at Aldershot and was back on the bench.

Yann Kermorgant replaced Marvin Sordell in the only change to the team that won at Blackburn last week. Chris Powell resisted the temptation to restore Johnnie Jackson to the starting line-up, the skipper was again on the bench.

Kermorgant suffered a recurrence of his ankle problem early in the game and after trying to carry on, the French striker had to be replaced nine minutes before the interval.

The Addicks were in the ascendency in the first half and created two really good chances in the opening period. After 35 minutes, Cameron Stewart cut a ball back from the left, only for Bradley Pritchard to blaze over.

Two minutes before the break, a Wood header from a right-wing corner had to be scrambled off the line.

Wigan came into the game more in the second half and created a number of chances of their own but their finishing let them down.

The Addicks have now kept three consecutive clean sheets but unfortunately have only managed to score one goal in those games.

With Kermorgant injured again, Powell is short of striking options. Richard Wood also had to be replaced, after sustaining an injury in the second half.

Leon Cort is not yet fit, leaving Michael Morrison and Dorian Dervite as the only fit senior central defenders. The manager may be forced to go into the loan market for a player or two if Kermorgant and Wood do not recover quickly.
