There was drama after the final whistle at The Valley on Saturday. Jorge Teixeira received a second yellow card for throwing the ball at Steve Morison. Teixeira will miss next week’s game against Scunthorpe.
Patrick Bauer had to be helped back to the dressing room, and looks doubtful for next week’s Scunthorpe game. Josh Magennis landed awkwardly on his ankle and looks set to be out for some time.
The Addicks also lost debutant, Lewis Page, in the first half. The left-back appeared to pick up a hamstring injury.
Karl Robinson will have to consider his options carefully and decide if he needs to make a speedy foray into the transfer market.
The other debutant, Nathan Byrne, had a fine first half but faded after the interval.
Nothern Ireland manager, Michael O’Neill, was in the crowd to watch Josh Magennis, but he
only got to see the big striker for ten minutes before he was forced to leave the action.
He landed awkwardly after going up for a header, and was in considerable pain. Magennis’ injury gave Tony Watt the chance to make an early entry to the game, but the Scot looked way short of match fitness.
Ricky Holmes made his comeback from the bench late on, Jake Forster-Caskey was an unused substitute, while Declan Rudd returned in place of Dillon Phillips in goal.
Bauer went closest for Charlton, he twice had the ball in the net in the second period, and he also forced Jordan Archer into a full length save to keep a goal bound effort out.
Bauer’s first ‘goal’ was disallowed for a clear push, but his second effort was much more contentious. Archer appeared to miss his kick, and the German took advantage.
Referee, Keith Stroud, awarded a free-kick for a foul on the keeper by the big stopper, but television replays suggested the goal should have stood.
Lee Gregory went close on a number of occasions, and Steve Morison had a shot hooked off the line by Teixeira.
The Addicks lacked a cutting edge after they lost Magennis, and Gregory and Morison were a handful for Bauer and Teixeira.
Robinson said after the game that Lee Novak could be available next week. With Nicky Ajose – not even on the bench for this game – unsuited to Robinson’s 4-2-3-1 system, the manager may have to consider his options if Magennis is sidelined for any length of time.
This point came at a heavy price.
