This game was an absolute shocker with no real excitement during the entire 90 minutes.
Karlan Grant did get the ball in the net just past the hour mark, but the assistant’s flag had already gone up for offside.
Substitute, George Lapslie, had a header cleared off the line in stoppage time, as the game drifted to a 0-0 draw.
Lee Bowyer brought Mark Marshall back in place of Albie Morgan in the only change to the team that drew with Peterborough on Tuesday.
Igor Vetokele came off the bench to replace Marshall just past the hour mark, and Jason Pearce was also on the bench.
Bowyer had this to say about his team’s performance after the game:
”I’ve been told that we created 20 chances but only hit the target five times, that shows our general play hasn’t been bad. From back to front, we look alright but that final third is what we have to keep working on.
“Eventually we are going to get it right. We had two cleared off the line, Karlan has tried to slide one across for Lyle and Lyle has tried to slide one across for Karlan when he probably should have shot.
“At the moment, when we should shoot we are passing and when we should pass we are shooting.
“We looked tired as well, we looked a bit lethargic at times and that is probably because we put so much into Tuesday.
“I’ve said to the lads in there that, for me, it wasn’t really good enough. I expect more from them because I know what is there.
“Have we played badly? No, but there wasn’t enough drive and enthusiasm and hunger to win the game.
“We had two or three of them running around to try and drag the three points out but we needed nine, 10, eleven of them doing it.”
Bowyer went on to say he expects to be active in the transfer market before the window closes on Friday.
One player is expected to arrive on Monday, possibly West Ham’s Josh Cullen:
“On Monday, I’m hoping to bring someone in, maybe two. They play in different positions.
“I can’t see anyone going, not unless they want to. If they want to go they can go but at the present time I don’t think there is anyone interested in any of our players.”
